1. Lights

What's wrong, in plain English: Headlights, tail lights or turn signals may not work, making the car hard to see. The driver's side high beam may be inoperable after the installation of accessory fog lights. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

What could happen: An inoperable driver's side high beam may reduce visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: Dealers will install an updated wiring harness, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 11, 2022. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET's number for this recall is SET21A.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2022 4RUNNER.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Toyota dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 21V963000 (manufacturer code SET21A).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-866-405-4226.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
