1 safety recall, most serious first

High risk Campaign 15V674000 · announced 19/10/2015 (10 years ago)

1. Electrical system

What's wrong, in plain English: Wiring, modules, batteries. Short circuits can cause stalls or fires. In the affected vehicles, grease applied to the contact points inside the ignition switch may become conductive and overheat.

What could happen: If the ignition switch overheats there would be an increased risk of a fire.

The fix: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. The recall began on December 17, 2015. Owners may contact Mazda Customer Experience Center at 1-800-222-5500, option#6. Mazda's number for this recall is 8715J.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 1990 PROTEGE.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Mazda dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 15V674000 (manufacturer code 8715J).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-800-222-5500.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
