1. Brakes

What's wrong, in plain English: Anything that slows the car down. Treat brake recalls as urgent. The Integrated Electronic Brake (IEB) system may detect an abnormal sensor signal and as a result, may significantly reduce braking performance.

What could happen: Reduced braking power could lengthen the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will update the IEB software, free of charge. The recall began January 25, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 199.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2019 NEXO.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Hyundai dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 20V748000 (manufacturer code 199).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-855-371-9460.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.

2. Fuel system

What's wrong, in plain English: Fuel lines, tank or pump. Fuel problems usually mean a leak, and leaks mean fire risk. Following hydrogen refueling, the inlet receptacle filter could detach and cause a hydrogen fuel leak.

What could happen: A hydrogen leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

The fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the hydrogen fuel inlet receptacle, free of charge.
