1. Transmission / drivetrain

What's wrong, in plain English: The parts that send engine power to the wheels. Failure can mean a sudden loss of power or the car rolling away. The park pawl may not fully engage the park gear due to a casting defect in the transmission.

What could happen: A vehicle which does not have the park pawl fully engaged may result in a vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the transmission, or the valve body and extension housing, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 16, 2024. Owners may contact Ford's customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford Motor Company's number for this recall is 23S54.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2025 F-650 SD.
  2. Book a repair at any authorized Ford dealer. Quote NHTSA campaign 23V625000 (manufacturer code 23S54).
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-866-436-7332.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.

Brakes do not have proper stopping power. The brakes are very slow to react, and the brake pedal has a long travel before the truck starts to slow down. This can be extremely dangerous in city driving. We have four of these F-650s in our fleet, and all four of these trucks exhibit the same poor braking. Trucks are all new with hydraulic brakes.
