1. Engine — fix not yet available

What's wrong, in plain English: Engine problems range from stalling to fire. The engine connecting rods may not have been installed properly, possibly causing them to become loose and disconnect over time.

What could happen: Loose engine connecting rods can damage the engine, causing a loss of engine power, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: The motorcycle has not yet been sold, and the dealer will replace the engine, free of charge, prior to sale. The recall began December 7, 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

What to do

  1. Check whether your car is affected: enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific VINs, not every 2019 F850GS.
  2. The fix is not available yet. Register your contact details with the dealer so they call you when parts arrive.
  3. The repair is free. By US law, safety recall repairs cost the owner nothing, no matter the car's age or mileage.
  4. Manufacturer hotline: 1-800-525-7417.
  5. Buying this car used? Ask the seller for proof the recall was completed, or run the VIN yourself before paying.
